The D Star Certificate is not a compulsory certificate and is usually undertaken to help candidates move from the D Certificate to the C Certificate which cannot be undertaken until the Pony Club Member is 12 years old.

The objectives of the D Star are to increase the candidate's riding ability to the point where they are working towards a balanced and independent seat plus greater control of the pony.

The horsemastership or theory component of the D star moves toward a greater understanding of the care of the pony with the introduction of identification of illness and the appropriate treatment of these illnesses.
